Why am I involved with ECHO?

Each night when I tuck my 3½-year-old son into bed, we thank God for giving us food to eat, a warm home, a healthy body and a loving family. We pray for people who might not have these things. You see, I don’t want our children to take for granted the many blessings we have. Through my work with ECHO and other organizations such as the United Way of the Big Bend, I know that each night one in four children in Leon County go to bed hungry. I also know that with a little help, many of these families can turn things around. This is why I choose to support ECHO. They are focused on helping individuals and families in crisis and poverty. They do so in a loving way and truly give people a hand “up” – and not simply a handout.
I also choose to support ECHO because God calls us to serve others. Each of us were put on Earth to make a contribution, to make a difference with our lives. This calling is simple and clear and one my family takes seriously.
“It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others.” (Ephesians 2:10 LB)
I love that ECHO is also faith-based which means it was founded and is still supported by area churches. This was a motivating factor for me when I joined the board this year. With God, all things are possible, including ensuring no child has a hungry belly while saying their prayers at night.
